Once more we have the opportunity to write about Age Concern in Chiclana; we normally only have a couple of people needed to help people each week, and a lot of phone calls are for information from our extensive database. We unfortunately didn’t have enough volunteers a month ago when we were called upon to take someone to and from Puerta Real hospital twice a day.
What a lovely thing it is when community turns out at a time of need; there is no way I can thank all the people who volunteered to take the partner to hospital. I also thank the volunteer co-ordinator for the superb effort. There was always someone on hand to cover. I know that volunteering on a regular basis is not what most people want to do but in an hour of need, a vast number came forward. If you were one of those volunteers, may I make an appeal to you; we need people who are happy to be phoned on an ad-hoc basis. We do not need you to commit to a given number of hours a month, just someone that we can ring when there is need for a temporary increase in the needs of the community.
This incident has caused us to have a major review of our resources; not an easy task and we need to upgrade our phone which failed in our hour of need. We will write more after our next meeting, but now is the time to phone our lifeline to ask for help or to volunteer.
