Age Concern Mallorca - Snails’ Delight!!

One man’s garden pest is another man’s gourmet delight, as anyone who signs up for the Age Concern excursion on Friday, March 21, to a snail farm and an ethnology museum, will find out.

A frequent sight in the Majorcan countryside after a shower of rain is groups of people, heads bent, looking for snails, which can be prepared in a variety of ways, or simply added to a paella or arroz brut. They are a great favourite in Majorca and can be found in many restaurants specializing in local cuisine.

At the farm, the snails are pampered in a carefully controlled micro climate, which provides them with organic, pesticide-free plants to eat, and ensures that they are plump and tasty.

If you have never tried them, now is the time to take the plunge and it is worth noting that they are low in fat and calories, and rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium and iodine as well as vitamin C.

After the snail farm, the excursion will continue to the Ethnology Museum, an offshoot of the Museum of Majorca in Palma.

Set in a 17th century mansion, it displays, costumes, work implements and other objects, providing an insight into life in early 20th century rural Majorca.

A buffet lunch and wine is included in the 25€ cost and booking is essential. For information call Jackie on 971-231520 or 678-352040 best after 10am or evenings.
