The Age Concern (Costa de la Luz Sur) association was set up back in 2010 and became affiliated to Age Concern España, which was affiliated with Age Concern in the UK. They helped us set it up and supplied lots of background information.
Time has moved on and Age Concern UK became Age UK. As they own the rights to the name Age Concern and the logo, our branch has become contracted to them for their use. Age Concern España, the Federation of Age Concern Organizations in Spain, is now standing down. Behind the scenes there is a lot of work associated with this because not only do our costs (income & expenditure) have to be audited but also the Age Concern committee and care workers are insured through Age Concern España. So I would like to thank all those unsung heroes who in the background have been slaving away to ensure Age Concern (Costa de la Luz Sur) continues to be able to help this community.
Whilst giving thanks can I also publically thank all those who generously give money or time to us; without our volunteers and sponsors we would have to close. Our brick built shelter was built over a year ago at a material cost of under 1,000€; a lot of free labour was given to us to build it and it now houses all our wheelchairs etc.
Our Monday morning Drop In Centre continues; just one Monday the subjects discussed included “What we can do for others” (the friendly ear), TV and methodology of obtaining British TV, films and shows, and even monthly shopping trips to “other exotic locations”.
You don’t have to have problems to drop-in, just come along to the Venta Florentina in Pago del Humo and find us in the small room to the right of the front door between 10-30 & 12 noon.
For people over 50 who require help or advice, Age Concern Costa de la Luz Sur operates a “Helpline” telephone service from 9am until 5 pm, Monday through Friday (it is not an emergency service – please dial 112 for emergencies). The telephone number is 634 31 52 89. You may also email us at email@example.com
